What is the Lumma Menstrual Disc?

The Lumma Menstrual Disc is the latest product released in a long line of health products designed by the family business, Promillus. Since Lumma is in charge of the manufacturing of their Cups (from the factory to retailer), the customer does not need to sacrifice quality for cost. The Lumma is unique to other menstrual discs. It features a silicone string to make removal easier, it comes in a selection of colours, and it is also the only disc-style cup that is available in 3 different sizes. How to use the Lumma Menstrual Disc:

Thoroughly wash hands before inserting the Lumma Menstrual Disc.

To Insert:

  1. Squeeze the rim in the middle of the Lumma disc to form an ‘8’ shape.
  2. Insert the Lumma into the vaginal canal, ensuring the stem enters last.
  3. Push the disc toward the very end of the vaginal canal until you feel that it’s sitting underneath your cervix.
  4. Push the front of the rim upwards in order to secure it behind the pubic bone. It is possible that some of the silicone stem may remain outside the entrance of the vagina. (For those that prefer, the stem can be shortened with scissors or cut off altogether.)

To Remove:

Pull lightly and slowly with the front of the stem until the rim of the Lumma disc slips down from behind the pubic bone. Once it is lined up with the entrance of the vagina, carefully pull the disc out with your fingers, trying to maintain a horizontal angle to help reduce spillage.

How to Clean the Lumma Menstrual Disc:

At the beginning and end of each menstrual cycle, it is recommended to boil the Lumma Disc in water for three minutes. This can be done in a pot on the stove, or in the microwave. Allow to air dry. Your disc will then be sterile and ready to use or store. During your cycle, simply rinse under cold water or use any brand of menstrual cup cleaner to give it a more thorough clean.

Been a game changer for me. I do need to wear pads/liners on the first day or two as the small size disc doesn’t hold as much but it’s the perfect size for me. Takes a bit of getting used to learning how to insert but once you’re used it just like a tampon only way better. Saves money and helps the environment too!

While I would not recommend purchasing directly from Lumma (my experiences of dealing with them directly were awful), the product itself has been fantastic so far (I’ve only had the opportunity to use it for one cycle since purchase).

I experienced none of the problems that tend to come with the territory of using a new menstrual product. I found the disc super easy to use, easy to clean, and I can’t foresee the need to return to disposables, which is such a joy!

I’ll likely be purchasing a second Lumma disc.

I love, love, love the Lumma Menstrual Disc! It is very soft and flexible while having a rim structure at the top. It is completely easy to hold in the figure ‘8’ shape with one hand and inserts extremely easily. With the aid of the pull cord, it is easy to remove. I usually get toilet paper and grab onto the pull cord with toilet paper when removing, as the paper catches the initial out spilling of blood and it then does not go directly on your hands. Very easy to clean (with either toilet paper or wipes) and simple and easy to reinsert. Comfortable once inserted!

Only used for one cycle so far so still getting used to it. I have an extremely low cervix so the disc style works better for me. Insertion is easy and can auto-dump but is messier to remove than a cup. Overall very satisfied

It came so fast and for me is so much more comfier than tampons of wearing pads

I ordered the small size after I got a lot of discomfort with a larger disc. While it was comfortable, the inside didn’t seem to drop down once inserted, therefore significantly reducing the capacity. Also, the disc would tip upside down at will, quite possibly just because it was a little small for me. I’ll be trying other brands before I come back to try a larger size in this disc.

I’ve decided to come back to this review, unfortunately things have only gotten worse with time, I’ve found it way too unreliable. I’ve given it a try every single cycle since I bought it, trying different positioning, but as sure as the sun rises, I move/breathe/cross my eyes the wrong way and it leaks and makes me feel like I must have really freaky lady parts or something. And in my case it’s definitely not better for the environment due to all the water and paper involved in cleaning up the messes. And its sooooo much messier than pad or tampon leaks because it’s a disc-full in a few seconds. Basically every time I sit down or pee it moves and leaks and keeps leaking unless I reposition it, and even then it often keeps leaking, making the bathroom look like the set of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I never get anywhere near 12 hours out of it unless my period is super, super light (I’m talking 12 hours out of a panty-liner light), I get better performance out of tampons. After a couple of days of struggling with the mess and leaks every cycle I go back to tampons and pads, sadly.

I decided to try a disc rather than a cup as I heard they’re easier to insert. It has mainly been a good experience, I am still getting used to it. I’m not sure if sometimes it slips when I pee or whether it is autodumping, need to wear a liner on heavy days because of this, which I was hoping to avoid. The silicone can be a bit ‘grabby’ on insertion sometimes. A few times it seems to have turned upside down, wtf? Still, I feel it is an improvement over tampons and pads, even if not quite the period nirvana I was hoping for.

This disc has changed my life! I hated using tampons, and had recently switched from disposable pads to reusable and period undies. I still love those options but the disc is also fantastic as well for internal, reusable products. I’ve found insertion and removal to be less difficult than I imagined, and so far no leaks! The possibility for adult fun is also a bonus.
