Saalt Menstrual Cup

We love the Saalt cup and so do our customers. It’s a great all round cup that suits the needs of many women. Not only that, it’s packaged beautifully and makes a great cup to gift! We decided to ask the founder of Saalt a few questions to find out more about the company. These were Cherie’s answers:

When did manufacturing of the Saalt Cup begin?

We started creating our first Saalt prototypes in the summer of 2017.

When did you first hear about menstrual cups, and what were your first thoughts about them?

We first heard about menstrual cups when researching reusable options for our family in Venezuela who had no access to tampons and pads to care for their periods. After our research, we were sold on the benefits right away! The fact that it was clean and nontoxic, that you could wear it for 12 hours at a time and sleep with it in, that it was more comfortable and healthier than tampons, and that it could last up to 10 years and divert 10 years of waste. We thought “where has this been all our lives?”

How has awareness of the Saalt brand predominately spread?

Via word of mouth! The freedom from disposables can be so liberating to new users, that they literally become human megaphones, telling all of their friends, family, neighbours, co-workers, and random strangers in the tampon aisle — not kidding, we hear the stories.

What do you love most about your job at Saalt?

Hearing feedback from our customers. Did you ever think you’d hear a period product described as “life-changing”?  No joke, this is the single most common message we get from new cup users after trying the Saalt Cup — and we never get tired of hearing it.

What do you consider to be the greatest challenge/s to menstrual cup manufacturers and distributors (if any)?

We knew when we created the Saalt Cup that we were entering a product category that is still pretty taboo for a lot of people. You have theseSaalt Menstrual Cups long-held stigmas around periods which have really stifled innovation to develop better period care options for women. We knew the way we presented our products, our brand, and our voice would be critical to shift the consumer mindset on reusable products. Really, the stigma presented both our greatest challenge, but also opportunity. We decided to overcome the stigma by taking it head-on by creating beautiful, high-end packaging that placed the cup on a pedestal and showcased the cup for what it actually is—a hands-down better user experience over disposables that’s also healthier, more comfortable, and more sustainable for the environment. We were very deliberate about our brand imagery and voice to elevate menstrual cups to sit on the same shelves as clean personal care products and actively work to normalize periods and educate consumers.

What do you consider to be the greatest benefit from using a menstrual cup like Saalt?

Using a cup simply makes for a cleaner, better period. Yes, the cup is nontoxic and chemical free; yes, the cup can divert massive amounts of waste; yes, you can save a lot of money by not buying pads and tampons for 10 years; and yes, you experience more freedom because you can wear the cup for up to 12 hours. But people who have never tried the cup often don’t understand that once you get past the learning curve, your period is just more comfortable and cleaner when you are using a cup in place of disposables.

What do you think is the greatest/most common challenge first time cup users encounter?

There is often a learning curve to using a menstrual cup for the first time. It generally takes 2 to 3 cycles to feel like you have it down (or should we say, up?!) It’s okay and normal to feel nervous or unsure about trying a period cup. Start by finding a friend who uses a cup and ask for their honest story of learning to use it. Or join our Saalt Cup Academy on Facebook and watch the questions and suggestions that other new cup users have. It can help you feel familiar with the learning curve that some new cup users experience. When you do try the cup, if you are still nervous, remember that trying the cup doesn’t have to be all or nothing. The first time you try it, you can fold the cup and insert it 1-2cm, and then you can call it a win for the day. Chances are that eventually, you’ll learn to use the cup so well, and it will be so comfortable, that you’ll forget that you are on your period on your lighter days.

If there was one thing you could say to a woman contemplating trying a Saalt menstrual cup, what would it be?

We know that using a cup for the first time can be intimidating for many people, but we’ve watched so many people educate themselves until they feel ready to try the cup, and wake up one day feeling brave and decide to give the cup a try. In the end, the cup will become one of your new best friends. You’ll have each other for 10 years! If you need further reassuring, check out our amazing community of period cheerleaders at our Saalt Cup Academy on Facebook. Be forewarned, they will dispel any doubt you have to take the plunge and try the cup. We say ditch that tampon box under the sink, and give the Saalt Cup a try.
