Determining your Amount of Flow

How to use the Ruby Cup:

Be sure to boil your Ruby cup for 2-3 minutes before using it for the first time. You can also sterilise it using the Ruby Clean microwave steriliser. When starting out on your menstrual cup journey, be patient and relax. It can take a couple of cycles to get used to your new cup.

Insertion:

  1. Always wash your hands before insertion or removal of your Ruby Cup
  2. Fold the cup into the ‘C-fold’ (or your other favourite type of fold)
  3. Gently push the Ruby cup into your vagina so that it is positioned underneath your cervix. Head towards the tip of your tailbone rather than in a ‘straight up’ angle.
  4. Once inserted, allow the cup to ‘pop’ open and create a suction seal around the vaginal wall.

Removal:

  1. Wash your hands
  2. Gently pull the stem with your fingers and use your stomach muscles to ‘bear down’ and move the Ruby cup downwards until you can grasp the base of the cup.
  3. Squeeze the base of the cup to release the suction and then carefully remove it.
  4. Empty, rinse, and reinsert. If you can’t access any water for rinsing your cup, simply wipe it with some toilet tissue. You can then rinse it properly when next able.

Depending on your level of flow, you may need to empty your cup every 4-8 hours.

How to Clean the Ruby Cup:

During your cycle, simply rinse your cup with cold water every time you empty it. It is then ready to re-insert. You do not need to disinfect your cup between uses during your period.

At the end of your cycle, it is recommended to disinfect your cup before storing it away until next time. Rinse your cup and then immerse in a pan or pot of water. Boil for 3-5 minutes being careful that the cup doesn’t touch the base of the pan. You can also sterilise the Ruby cup in the microwave using the portable and handy Ruby Clean Sterilizer.

After sterilising, ensure the cup is completely dry before storing it away in its cotton bag. It should be stored in such a way that it receives some ventilation, so avoid keeping your cup in an airtight container.

Worked really well for the first 3-4 days, though as I have a lighter flow, I did get a bit uncomfortable towards the end of day 4 and ended up changing back to reusable pads. Otherwise worked perfectly, and as a first time cup user, found the experience a lot easier than expected.

  2. Verified Buyer (verified owner)

As a first-time user, I found the Ruby Cup super easy to use. It even comes with a little instruction manual. Everything (except for removal) was much easier than I expected. Even that just takes a little practice! This has lessened the re-purchasing of other period products I have to do, which is one less thing to think about, and of course, helps the planet. Since I’ve only used it for a few cycles, I still like to pair it with period underwear for peace of mind. All that to say, highly recommend this product!

Love Ruby cup. Have been using for a few years now with no issues at all. Love it!

  6. Emily (verified owner)

It’s a great product, does not cause any hassle once inserted. No trouble forming a seal, no leaking, and can’t feel it once it’s fully in. Took some learning to get used to as this is my first cup, but I found strictly following all guidelines to be helpful. The size looks intimidating for my small opening but a punch down fold and a correct squat really helps. It may be slightly too firm for some, as I’ve found it a bit hard to hold the fold in place if I take a long time to insert, but not a problem after I got used to it. It is also hard to break the seal when taking out, it seals back on by itself really easily, perhaps also due to how firm it is. However, the firmness keeps its shape and makes it easy to pop open when inserting, so I reckon it is not a downside.

  7. Olivia (verified owner)

Love this cup so much, I have tried others but they are uncomfortable. The Ruby Cup is unnoticeable when I’ve inserted it amd I can’t live without it, so much so that I had to buy another immediately when I accidentally flushed my other one down the toilet! Definitely recommend changing it in the shower instead of the toilet lol

  8. Taylor (verified owner)

I’ve been using the Ruby Cup for several years now and love it! Super comfortable (can’t even feel it) and easy to use.
As someone who has tried multiple brands of menstrual cups, I can honestly say that the MCA Ruby Cup is the best.
Multiple sizes and colours are a plus too 🙂

  9. Anonymous (verified owner)

As a beginner, I found this product easy to insert and remove, and very comfortable to wear.

  10. Abbie (verified owner)

Easy to put in/ take out and comfortable to wear

  11. Kate C. (verified owner)

Love my ruby cups! Medium works amazingly as a 29YO with no children and mod-heavy flow. Being able to go 5-6 hours without worrying is amazing!

  12. Jemma S. (verified owner)

This cup is amazing! Best one I have brought.

  13. Anonymous (verified owner)

I love the Ruby Cup. It’s brilliant, it has a learning curve but once you navigate that it’s a lifesaver. I forget I’m on my period when I wear it.

  14. Nicola (verified owner)

Love this cup, material is soft and flexible. Very comfortable to wear but no leaking. Black colour doesn’t show any staining. Very happy with my purchase!

  15. [email protected] (verified owner)

I’m really disappointed in this product! I tried Ruby cup after 4 years of using my Lunette cup, and I have to say its leaked every single time I’ve worn it. I’ve tried so many different ways of inserting it and it feels locked in place but it leaks every time! So frustrating. I’ll be going back to my Lunette cup

Not sure why I didn’t do this sooner!! Easy to use, comfortable one less thing to feel inconvenienced by at that time of the month!!

  17. Anonymous (verified owner)

Excellent quality, speedy delivery. Highly recommend!

  18. Julie M. (verified owner)

This is my first menstrual cup and I think it is well designed. The instructions that came with it were easy to follow and helped me climb the learning curve. I choose the purple colour and its really cute. I also love that it lets you measure your blood as it helps me track my period.

  19. Nicole (verified owner)

Changed my brand of menstrual cup to Ruby and am really happy I did! Softer silicone that fits much better and more comfortable

  20. Tory (verified owner)

Still getting use to it cause it can be tricky to get use to, but definitely happy I switched

  21. Anonymous (verified owner)

Worked well and did not leak at all

  22. Vanessa (verified owner)

Can’t recommend the Ruby Cup highly enough! Wish I’d made the switch sooner.
I went with the medium size as I’ve had children & used tampons most of my life. Although the size looked slightly daunting to begin with, it fitted well and I couldn’t feel it when inserted (although I am considering trimming the stem). Happily used overnight & all day and I’ve had no problems at all with leaks.
I found the instructions, other reviewers recommendations & YouTube explanations really helpful to understand how best to insert & remove. After a couple of attempts I got the hang of it pretty quickly – trying out in the shower really helped & removed any worries when it came to the potential thought of spilling blood all over the floor!
If you’ve been on the fence about making the switch, just do it – you won’t regret it! And the buy one give one is a fantastic initiate to get behind.
    Ruby Cup for the win!

This isn’t my first Ruby Cup and it won’t be my last. Freedom from sanitary waste is a blessing you didn’t know you could have! Switch to a cup ladies, if you hang in there and get through the awkwardness, once you’re used to it you won’t know how you ever lived without one.

  25. Brittany (verified owner)

Arrived in a plain box (thank you!) and it’s just want I needed size wise and great packaging. Very happy

  26. Ciara (verified owner)

I love the Ruby cup, I can barely feel it, once I put it in. I also love the concept that get one give one to a woman/person who bleeds in need.

Absolutely love this Cup, really comfy and secure, didn’t need to trim and have had no leakages! 100% would recommend.

  30. Jade T. (verified owner)

Amazing and I love how eco friendly it is.

  31. Julie (verified owner)

I chose to move to a cup because it is more sustainable. I’ve only used it for one cycle but found it easy to use and didn’t feel it at all (whereas sometimes I would be aware of a tampon). I had a little leakage in the first few days read up on how to avoid leaks and it was all sorted! Removing the cup can be a little uncomfortable but I think with continued use it will become much easier. It is very simple, comfortable and worth changing to.

  32. Samantha (verified owner)

Apart from the over-sizing, the stem is a little long but it can be cut. The cup volume is ample for the amount of blood which came as a surprise. It’s reasonably comfortable to wear although getting it in is awkward. (I tried a pre-period test run which was a terrible idea). Removing it safely is a bit tricky too. The suction freaked me out (prolapse anyone??).
The first day when I removed the cup, I cannot express how bad the smell was. Seriously rancid. But it must have been related to my internal bacteria because the second day was back to normal.
It will take me a year or more to recoup the costs of the cup compared with pads and tampons, but environmentally it’s a good choice, and it’s quite convenient. Not having the mess makes you almost forget you’re on your period.

  38. Marlene B. (verified owner)

  39. Hannah (verified owner)

Good “goldilocks” firmness- not so firm that its hard to insert (7 fold) but not so soft that it won’t pop open or that it gets crushed during exercise. A bit short for my high cervix days, but great otherwise. Love the black as well!

I’m still getting the hang of it but I’m very happy with it. It is my first cup, and so so so (cannot stress it enough!) much BETTER than using pads. Just super duper comfy! I wasn’t game enough to use it during the day but it is a definite game changer. It leaked a bit during the first night but i left it in all night long to test it out.

I am so happy I finally ordered one. Apart from feeling free from waste, I’m terrible at remembering to carry tampons with me. This is the best cause once you have it with you, it’s always there. Don’t have to remember to bring anything! It cleans up ok with TP in a public toilet situation.

  63. Jessica M. (verified owner)

I went for the smaller size beachside generally my period it’s pretty light but think I could use the bigger size on the heavier days. I’ve have children and know the bigger size is recommended but found it intimidating. I think having both would work well for me. I only had leaking on the heavier days so think using the bigger size on those days would help.

  64. Vanessa (verified owner)

I have a Diva cup that took time to get used to, so I expect the Ruby will take a while to get used to as well.
Having said that, don’t give up if you find the cup awkward at first, it is worth it in the end. Think of the money and environmental benefits, and the other girls around the world you are helping who are less fortunate.

  66. Anonymous (verified owner)

Really happy! One cycle in and found it straight forward and simple to use, would recommend.

  67. Janet (verified owner)

Should have switched years ago. I sleep so much better with the Ruby cup. Good instructions with it too. Give it a try. Just have showers morning and night it’s easy.

  68. Jenna (verified owner)

I don’t love it – the stem has a very rough texture and while that may help for grip it’s uncomfortable once placed. There’s also a small hole in the end of the stem that I feel could be hard to keep clean and free of bacteria. Overall there are other cups that are much better than this one, in my opinion.

  69. Eve (verified owner)

  70. Veneche-Leigh (verified owner)

This is a great cup! I have previously used a less flexible cup and was quite happy with it but I like the Ruby cup more. It’s soft enough to easily insert and remove but still stays in place. I also like the black color because you can’t see the staining as easily. Really happy with it.

  71. Cristina (verified owner)

I love my ruby cup. It was super easy to get started and for me, it lasts all day or all night. Only thing is I find it quite frustrating to take out, but as it’s my first cup, I guess that will just become easier in time with more practise. (Long nails don’t help!)
Happy I finally made the change to a cup. No more buying tampons. Oh and ZERO cramps while using. Amazing! Still had a few pre-menstrual cramps but none at all throughout the period. That’s pretty awesome.

  72. Olivia (verified owner)

  73. Anonymous (verified owner)

A very well made cup! Only negative thing I say is that is a bit too firm for me.

  74. Anonymous (verified owner)

  75. Kylee M. (verified owner)

I bought the Ruby Cup because I liked that one cup was then getting donated to women and girls who need it. The cup itself is great, although I will only use this one for light days. I’ve had a few mishaps, such as dropping it down the loo but with a Ruby Cup steriliser, no problems (just gross getting it out of the loo haha!) It was difficult to insert the first time (trial run) with some panic when I couldn’t locate it to get it out (long cervix, obviously!) but by the time I got my period, it was manageable. I think it was the wrong size for me because I found when it was at near capacity, I could feel the suction release and then I’d have to rush very quickly to the loo. I prefer for myself the PelviCup, which is a bit softer to insert and better for my needs (over 40, had children, heavy periods).
But I’d recommend the Ruby Cup to others due to price, quality and it’s commitment to helping others.

Blood everywhere, every day! Tried all the insertion techniques, at every angle and height. Nothing worked. Really disappointed, I really wanted to stop using tampons and pads – so much waste. Unsure if this is a Ruby Cup problem or cups in general, having only tried this cup.

    • Naomi (store manager)

Hi, Thank you for leaving feedback for the Ruby Cup. Learning to use a cup usually takes a few cycles and there can be a few factors that may be the cause of the leaking you are experiencing. If you would like to send us an email, we would be happy to troubleshoot with you and hopefully help make the Ruby Cup work next time 🙂

  81. Anonymous (verified owner)

Everyone should use a cup. Yes, it takes a little getting used to, but the reduction in the amount of waste you produce and the convenience is worth it.

  82. Nicole (verified owner)

I’ve only used it for one cycle so far and I got the hang of it! It did take a few tries, I could still feel it at first and I was putting it in a bit too far. I also felt panicky when I thought it was ‘stuck’ but I reread the instructions and realised i wasn’t ‘pushing down’ in order to get hold of the cup and break the seal. Simple. By the end of this cycle I had no problem sitting it in the right position, I couldn’t feel it at all and no leakage. I think I will buy the bigger size too as I don’t want to have to change it every 4 hours for heavy flow. I chose Ruby Cup because the ‘how to choose the right size’ info was simple, it sounded like a great first cup, and the ‘give one’ concept. I think I made a great choice.

  91. Joy T. (verified owner)

I have only used it once so far. It’s very flexible and easy to insert. I had some trouble getting it into the correct position and had some leakage at first. I also had trouble removing it as it felt like it had moved higher up. If not for the thick stem with the bumps, I worried that I might not be able to retrieve it. I got the black cup which gives the illusion that it’s less messy, as you can’t see the blood. I would recommend this cup to others.

A great flexible cup that opens up well to stop leaks.
I got the black as it does not show staining which makes it feel fresher and nicer for much longer.
The sizing is based on flow, although, I would recommend the smaller size for women under 30 or who have not had children. The smaller cup is absolutely big enough for a heavy flow.

I always struggled with tampons (either because I’m too small or my fingers were too short to push it all the way in…) and a cup is definitely so much easier! Considering this was the first cup i ever purchased, i’m very pleased to find it’s the right fit. My period is generally not super heavy and I can get away with emptying the cup (I got a small size Ruby cup) just twice a day, which is so much nicer than having to deal with changing pads or the smelly rubbish it creates. Definitely worth the money, convenience and lack of rubbish. Would recommend!
